NOVEMBER  2009

Here is the November edition of Coventry Bridge Club newsletter. If you would like to receive the newsletter or other club notifications by email, please let either Pam or Ann know.

EBU Pay to Play.

At the EGM on 19th November the members voted 76 to 16 in favour of affiliating fully to the EBU. This vote overturns the decision taken at the AGM to disaffiliate. A summary of the meeting will be available on the Secretary’s notice board within the next couple of days.

Bridge Club Relocation

The building of the club is storming ahead, the builders concentrating on our building whilst issues are resolved on a gas pipe, which has been found to go under the function room at CNW.

A sub group of the committee have met to discuss fixtures and fittings and IT requirements.  The whole committee felt that it is important to equip the larger room with new chairs if at all possible (funds allowing) and you may have seen a sample of one on the landing.  This is the type of chair used at West Mids which members that play there have found comfortable. Please try this chair and let members of the committee know your views.  The best of the existing chairs will then be used in the two small rooms and be replaced when the kitty has built up again.  An order has been placed for new side tables.  We are looking to the future in terms of IT and plan to have the infrastructure in place for bridgemates, display screens, public address system and projectors for teaching.

Membership Issues

Welcome to Charlene Kalle & Adrian Williams, who were accepted as club members at November Committee.

The Club received a letter from Barbara Luckman, advising of the death of her husband John on the 18th October 2009.  A number of members will recall John, both as a player and as our Auditor for a number of years.

We have also been advised that Doris Bayliss has decided not to play at the club any longer.  The Committee have sent the Club’s best wishes to her.

Best Behaviour at Bridge

The issue of conduct at the bridge table was raised at the November Committee meeting.

The Committee would like to bring to the attention of both members and visitors that Coventry Bridge Club expects all players to respect both their partners and other players.

Match Directors will therefore fine players as per EBU guidance and players should call the director if they are being disturbed by the behaviour of others or if they have been affected by other players’ bad behaviour.

Fines can result in up to 20% of scores being deducted, and lead to disqualification from competitions or disciplinary hearings.

Please see notice on Secretary’s board taken from EBU website.

Forthcoming Events

Coventry Pairs League

Next 2 sessions will be held on the 26th of November and 17th December.

 Three Spires

The next session will be on the 29th November, and then the 13th December. Please remember to put your team names on the list on the board.

 Christmas Party

There is a list up on the flip chart board on the landing for pairs for the Christmas party to be held at CNW on Sunday the 20th December.  Cost will be kept at £15, as last year.  We have been made aware that last year a number of members didn’t actually attend after saying they would.  This takes places from members who do wish to attend, and to cover food costs members will still be charged if they don’t show.

Club Calendar & Description of Events.

A brief description of the format of events can be found at the end of the Club Calendar.  A revised calendar can be found pinned on the Secretary’s Notice Board.

Christmas and New Year Closures

Open Tuesday 22nd December, and then closed until Tuesday 29th December, open again on Tuesday 4th January.

Chicago Events

The qualifying heat of the Tom Badnage Trophy was run as a Chicago event for the first time. This proved to be very successful and was enjoyed by all. More events in this style will be planned for the future, as this is an opportunity for Novices to maybe beat international players, based on the luck of the cards!
